Saturnalia Cactus
Many modern holiday cactus cultivars are hybrids between Schlumbergera truncata and S. russelliana, first bred about 150 years ago in England. Ours is well over 100 years old and bloomed on Saturnalia this year.
What a stunning photo! My grandmother would have loved it. Some of my earliest memories are of this plant in one of the unheated room upstairs. This was prior to the room being converted into a bathroom when they put in indoor plumbing during the late 1960s. The plant resided there -- along with many other plants on makeshift shelves -- catching light from the two windows just outside of Aunt Maude's bedroom.
